The benefits of green tea for heart disease, diabetes and weightloss

Dina Khader on the health benefits of green tea

The health benefits of green tea come from the anti-oxidants it contains. It helps to prevent heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and is great for weight loss. Green tea suppresses appetite.

Green tea also has a thermogenic effect. It raises the body temperature and therefore you burn more calories if you drink it regularly. It’s a great addition to any weight loss program.

The best way to brew green tea is to have the water just under boiling. This way you release the most anti-oxidants. Dump the tea bag into the water. The less time you let the bag steep, the less caffeine you get. If you are sensitive to caffeine, let it steep less than 3 minutes. If you boil the water, you get more caffeine in your tea.

Buy certified organic green tea in unbleached teabags. The commercial green teas are heavily sprayed with herbicides and pesticides, which can’t be removed.

For the latest research on green tea in Dutch read

Gabriel Cousens and Neal Barnard cure diabetes with a (raw) vegan diet

Diabetes is one of the main heath concerns in our modern society. In countries where people eat hardly any meat, sugar and white flour, there is no diabetes.

Neal Barnard M.D. and Gabriel Cousens M.D. cure diabetes with a vegan diet. Neal Barnard with mainly cooked food, Gabriel Cousens with mainly raw food. They both have success: their patients loose excess weight, their bloodsugar turns normal, as well as their cholesterol and blood pressure.

Gabriel Cousens even cured a patient with type 1 diabetes, who paticipated by accident in his program. This patient was totally cured and doesn't use insulin anymore.

For part 2 of these interesting video's on diabetes look at

Joel Fuhrman M.D. - Nutrient density is the key to good health

In this video Joel Fuhrman speaks about the nutrient density of foods.
I think this is a very interesting concept. It clarifies a lot of things.
Why do so many vegans look grey and pale? Why are so many rawfoodies too thin?
What should you eat, if you don’t want to eat 100% raw?
These are questions I get all the time. Here is the answer!

Portion sized diets don’t work. We have to desire smaller portions. To do that we have to eat high nutrient, high volume foods. High volume foods are raw vegetables, fresh fruits, cooked greens and non-green vegetables.
You should know the nutrient density of foods. The food that is highest in nutrient density are green vegetables. Kale has the highest number, followed by collards, spinach and bok choi. Fruits and vegetables are all above 100. All the other foods are below.
Most people on a vegan diet get most of their calories from grains, potatoes and oil. That can’t be a healthy diet.

Joel Furhman doesn’t mention the superfoods in this video. Those are also high density foods. That’s why they are called superfoods. Examples are raw cacao, goji berries, maca, wild honey, bee pollen, hemp seed, spirulina, chlorella and green powders (from edible grasses). I also miss the edible weeds, sprouted seeds and seaweeds.
Some of these probably have a nutrient density above 1000 ;-)

A diet of raw vegetables, fresh fruits, edible weeds, sprouted seeds, seaweeds and superfoods is ideal, if you want to eat 100% raw plant based diet. If you want to add some cooked food, add cooked greens and non-green vegetables.

If you use the hyper farming techniques David Wolfe tells about to grow these foods, you have the best diet ever!

In these video’s dr. Robert Young speaks about the importance of alkaline foods for weight loss and health. One of the reasons why a raw food diet works so well, is because it is a very alkaline diet.

Victoria Boutenko on green smoothies, greens in your raw food diet

Green smoothies are a combination of fruits and greens blended together. Green smoothies taste delicious and are very healthy.

The Boutenko family cured themselves from various diseases by changing to a raw food diet. The members of their family had a variety of diseases: a congenital heart defect, thyroid problems, arthritis, diabetes and asthma. Within a matter of months the family started experiencing profound improvement in their health and vitality. The Boutenko children experienced remarkable improvement in their results at school.

Other advantages Victoria experienced: red dots on her chest disappeared, moles fell off, her vision became clear, her grey hair disappeared (she doesn't color her hair), nails became stronger, hair stopped falling off, her weight became normal, her mood became more peaceful and she could work for hours at the computer, without getting problems with her eyes.

According to Victoria there are two groups of eaters:
- normal eaters, they stop when they have enough nutrition
- compulsive eaters, they eat because of other reasons, like entertainment, joy and sadness. They eat for intoxication. For those people it is even more important to change to a raw food diet, so that they can't intoxicate themselves anymore.

Some health benefits of green smoothies:
- they taste very good
- they are extremely easy to make
- they contain fibers
- they contain chlorophyl, which is very good for the blood
- they are great for immunity and help to heal diseases
- they don't contain oil or salt
- they don't oxidize for 3 or 4 days and are excellent to take when traveling

For green smoothie recipes look under the label A1 smoothies (right side of the blog).

Orthorexia Nervosa, Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia and the Raw Food Diet

This information comes from orthorexia.com and is written by Steven Bratman M.D.

What is Orthorexia?

It’s great to eat healthy food, and most of us could benefit by paying a little more attention to what we eat. However, some people have the opposite problem: they take the concept of healthy eating to such an extreme that it becomes an obsession. I call this state of mind orthorexia nervosa: literally, "fixation on righteous eating."

Such people are sometimes affectionately called "healthfood junkies." However, in some cases, orthorexia goes beyond a mere lifestyle choice. Obsession with healthy food can progress to the point where it crowds out other activities and interests, impairs relationships, and even becomes physically dangerous. When this happens, orthorexia takes on the dimensions of a true eating disorder, like anorexia nervosa or bulimia.

Do you wish that occasionally you could just eat, and not think about whether it’s good for you? Has your diet made you socially isolated? Is it impossible to imagine going through a whole day without paying attention to your diet, and just living and loving? Does it sound beyond your ability to eat a meal prepared with love by your mother – one single meal – and not try to control what she serves you? Do you have trouble remembering that love, and joy, and play and creativity are more important than food? Have you gotten your weight so low that people think you may have anorexia?

If you recognize yourself in these questions, you might have orthorexia.

Are you concerned that you (or someone you care about) may need help recovering from orthorexia? If so, please see my book Health Food Junkies for practical advice on how to overcome health-food obsession. However, if your orthorexia is so severe that you can't even keep up a minimum healthy weight, you really should see an eating disorder specialist. See the comments and suggestions at the end of the story about Kate Finn, on orthorexia.com.

An orthorexia nervosa, anorexia nervosa and bulimia patient tells about his disease.

The patient has a dialogue with his disease, especially with the orthorexia nervosa.
This is what happens if you take the raw food diet or any other healthy diet to an extreme ….

How to transition to a raw food diet and how to control your cravings

Kevin Gianni made a great video on how to transition to a raw food diet without stress.

Do you wonder how to transition to a healthy raw food diet? Do you have a problem to control your cravings? Do you wonder how others can be 100% raw. Do you start all over every time, but without success?

Watch Kevin’s video. I totally agree with him. Start with having the mindset for success. By the way, now you understand, how I came up with the name for this blog: raw food success. Your mindset is the most important. Everything starts there.

And … if you have the urge to eat something bad, don’t judge. Eat it or don’t. Don’t force something on yourself, you might not yet be ready for. Your body needs time. If you eat something “bad” and feel the consequences, maybe next time, you will make another choice.

I think the Chinese dietary system is great in this respect. Every food has its own unique qualities, there is no bad or wrong. It’s the same with Buddhism.
Ultimately, after eating healthier for some time, you and your body will change and the cravings will disappear by itself. Without realizing, you will find yourself eating 100% raw one day.

Have a fantastic day!

Brian Clement: Will Juice Feasting Stop the Craving for Cooked Foods?

Will juice feasting stop the craving for cooked food? We are not sure about that. Juice feasting is a lovely terminology, rather than deprivation, fasting, suffering and all the old terms, that were out there in the field. The new generation has given us some bright light on the subject.

If one is juice feasting on green juices and in particular sprout juices, that are very high in protein, there is a major biochemical component, protein, which will regulate the blood sugar and diminish the desire for food.

At the Hippocrates Institute guests come in and think they are going to starve. By the third day, nobody is hungry anymore, even the big overeaters. They get green sprout juices; wheatgrass juices. These juices are complete protein juices, completely digestible. They go into the blood stream, regulate the blood sugar and are extremely useful in reducing the desire to eat.

How to lose excess belly fat? There is one exercise that people all over the world need to do every day and that is abdominal exercise. You don't need a fancy machine. Brian Clement started over a decade ago. By that time even 20 or 30 times was difficult. Every January first he added 25 abdominal exercises. He is now up to just under 400 every day, seven days a week. If you do not do this, your belly fat will remain and you will not be neat and flat, as we call it, even if you eat a good diet.

The diets that work best are high enzyme diets. The food that has the highest enzyme in it for this belly fat is lipase. You can find it in the root vegetable jicama, onion sprouts and turnips. Also lipase as a supplement can be very helpful. Lipase is a fat-eating and fat-burning supplement. Even for people who are stagnating on fat loss, this can help. This lipase supplement can be taken short term.

How to Start a Raw Food Diet

Over the past few days, I got many questions on how to start a raw food diet. Many people hear about raw food, want to give it a try, but don’t know where to start or what to do.

I get questions like: “Do you eat just salads”. I’m hungry all the time, what can I do?
To make things clear, I’ll explain some things first.
A raw food diet is a diet, consisting of food, not heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit. And there are many ways of preparation, except for cooking, that you can do under this temperature. Take a look at the recipes on the blog and you will get an idea.
The raw food diet consists of natural organic fresh plant based food. Many people’s first reaction is “Salads!”, but there are many more things you can eat raw. Think about fruits, nuts, seeds, seaweeds, beans, grains, and not to forget superfoods. Superfoods are also plant based natural foods, the ones with a high nutrient density. Usually they have a long history as a natural medicine or as a longevity food. Examples are: raw cacao, maca, goji berries, spirulina, chlorella, bee pollen, noni, ginger, garlic and ginseng.

If you start with raw food, take your time. Your body is used to certain foods and it causes a lot of stress to change everything overnight. Yes, if you have a strong will power or if you are very sick, you can change right away. In most cases I don’t recommend this. Your body starts to detox fast, which makes it more difficult. By taking your time, the detoxing happens more naturally overtime.
By taking your time, you raw food adventure will turn into a big success.

Seven Steps to Raw Food Success:
1 Drink enough good quality water in between meals.
2 Add a lot of fruits to your diet, best before or as a breakfast and in between meals.
3 Add a salad to your lunch and dinner, best at the beginning. Eat normal afterwards. The food you chose to eat after your salad will change by itself overtime, don’t worry,
4 Buy some superfoods and start to experiment. Take one superfood smoothie a day (the recipe is on the blog). This is a great way, to add extra nutrients to your diet.
5 Stop eating sugar. Take fruits combined with nuts instead. By taking them together, the sugar of the fruits is more slowly absorbed by your body.
6 Stop to eat packaged, canned and fast food with artificial and chemical colorings, flavorings, preservatives and bad quality fats.
7 Keep studying diet. Buy good books or look for good information on the internet. Continuous learning will make it much easier overtime.

I don’t add addictions like coffee, smoking, alcohol and drugs to this list. Of course they need to be addressed, to get really healthy. Starting to eat raw food will also help to quit these additions. I will write another article about this later.

You can also use the approach mentioned, if you want to lose weight. Focus on superfoods, fresh vegetables, fruits, seaweeds and some nuts and seeds. I put superfoods in the first place here on purpose. Many people have cravings, because of deficiencies. By adding superfoods, you solve these deficiencies naturally overtime. This way staying on your raw food diet becomes much easier and great fun.

Once you are getting used to your new diet, don’t forget to add soaked nuts and seeds. They are a very important source of essential fatty acids and energy.

Vegan Diet for Diabetes and Weight Loss

A vegan diet can help you to cure diabetes, to lose weight and to balance cholesterol. The results of a balanced vegan (referably raw food) diet are very significant. Here are some interesting testimonials of people, who tell about their diabetes being cured, their weight loss and their cholesterol turning normal, without any conventional medicines.

If you have diabetes, make sure to get the proper medical guidance. Don’t experiment on your own, especially if you are on insulin. This may be dangerous. Discuss changes in your diet with your medical doctor or other healthcare professional.

Do you want to know more, read dr. Gabriel Cousens new book “There is a Cure for Diabetes”. You can order it at this website. Dr. Gabriel Cousens has a fantastic program to cure diabetes in both Arizona and Israel.

Are you interested in dr. Gabriel Cousens diabetes program, write an email to info@rawfood.nl.

Raw Food Detox Diet Plan

Do you want to eat a raw food diet and don’t know where to start?
Here are some basic steps, that can help you.

Why do you want to eat raw?
Are you overweight, do you need more energy, do you feel depressed, are you fed up with your binging, do you secretly know you are eating the wrong foods?
There are many reasons to start with raw food.

The raw food diet is the eldest diet known to people all over the world. It’s the food of the garden of Eden, the food many great philosophers ate, the food many spiritual traditions advocate and the food getting more and more scientific attention, because of all its health benefits. Raw plant food is also the best food for animal lovers.

How do you start a raw food diet?
If you start something new, you need a plan, in this case a diet plan.
Let’s start simple: decide now to add more fruits and raw vegetables to your diet. You can do this by adding fruits to your breakfast and salads to your lunch and dinner. Eat the fruits and salads (made with different vegetables, especially greens) before your meals. By eating them first, you make sure to eat them. Eat whatever you like after your fruits and vegetables.
In between meals take fruits, raw vegetables and raw nuts as snacks, if you need them.
Make sure to drink enough water before and in between your meals! Many people think they are hungry, when they are thirsty. First try water or herb tea, when you feel hungry.

You can also introduce some superfoods to your diet, like raw cacao, goji berries, maca, hempseed, flaxseed, spirulina, chlorella, MSM, aged garlic or medicinal mushrooms. These foods are very nutrient dense and help you to get rid of cravings.

Take time to adjust to a raw food diet. Your body needs time to get used to it and to get rid of toxins. If you go too fast, you make it more difficult for yourself, because you start to detox fast. After some time, you will get used to your new habits and you can take the next step. This is the easiest way to change to a raw food diet, lose weight and get more and more energy.

You can find much more information about all this in my new e-book, that will soon be available. The first part of this e-book explains all the raw food basics, like diet plans, weight loss, weight gain, detoxing and optimum health, as well as psychological and spiritual issues concerning diet. The second part contains all the basic recipes to make sure your raw food adventure will be a great success.

Health Benefits of Good Quality Structured Water

Video thumbnail. Click to play
Click To Play

Last November Esmé and I went to Israel to interview Gabriel Cousens. This is part of these interviews. More will be available soon.

Drinking good quality water is the key to a healthier and longer life. We are made mainly out of water.
Water is essential for all cellular and bodily functions.
Water helps to keep the blood thin, so that it can flow well.
Water is important for the elimination of toxins.
Water helps the body to metabolize stored fat and therefore to lose excess weight.
Water helps to relieve constipation.
Water suppresses appetite.
And water does many more things in the body.

Listen to Gabriel Cousens on how he creates the best quality drinking water:
"Because of all the pollution in the world, the best water is distilled water. But distilled water by itself is aggressive and immature. I out a formula in the book “Spiritual Nutrition”. You take a gallon of distilled water, add a pinch of salt or 12 drops of active ionic, so that you get 50 parts per million. This way you create H3O, the best water there is. With 50 parts per million, you don’t have the aggressive pulling out of minerals out of the body.
Then you structure this water by putting it out in the moonlight overnight. The moon structures water, not the sun. Then you bless it and you have good quality water. Crystal energy from micro crystals is also very good to structure it.
So first you heat the water and take out all the herbicides and pesticides, and destroy all the homeopathic pattern of the herbicides and pesticides. Then you restructure the water with salt, crystal energy, moonlight and by blessing it."

Personally I think that natural spring water is also a good quality water, if you can find a natural spring in the neighborhood. It's pure and alive, full of energy. Look at the power in a natural spring. This structured water sounds as a fantastic alternative though, if you life in the city or have no natural springs in the area.
